September Alumni Dinner

Hello again!

District X has been keeping very busy!

The Twin Cities Alumni held their monthly dinner on September 25, 2012. The dinner was held at Carmelo's, a cute little spot at St. Clair and Snelling in St. Paul. The prices were reasonable and the ambiance was fraternal. Just watch out for the step up to the back dining area!

Please forgive the crappy cell phone picture. The new DJ has a LONG
way to go to match Brother Maley's photography skills.

TWAC was joined by several members of Monroe Chapter. Our speaker was also Monrovian, and was just inducted to the fraternity the night before District Conference. Professor Morgan Holcomb, faculty at Hamline University School of Law, got her JD from the University of Minnesota Law School. She is an expert in all things taxation, and came to the dinner to share some of her latest research.

Professor Holcomb is currently researching tax policies on personal injury awards. As the code currently stands, awards based on physical injuries are not taxable. However, if damages are paid to a plaintiff for emotional injury, the award is taxable. Some of the issues with this policy is that it causes disparity between awards to men and women, transfers the tax burden of the injury to the person who was injured, and

Professor Holcomb is attempting to develop some new policies to eliminate these issues. Talking with the students and alumni even gave Professor Holcomb some new angles to research further.

A great time was had by all at this event. The Twin Cities Alumni Chapter sincerely thanks Professor Holcomb for her contribution to the monthly dinner. They look forward to her participation in future events.
